A unique feature of the Maremma is the variety of its territory: crystal sea, long beaches or inaccessible rocks, mountains covered by forests, lake areas and plains, green hills cultivated and natural thermal areas.
The Maremma Natural Park is a large protected coastal area, covered by the typical mediterranean vegetation with small isolated coves, which stretches from the pine forest of Principina a Mare to the promontory of Telamon, including a mosaic of ecosystems. Further south there is another coastal area of great beauty: through the WWF Oasis of the Lagoon of Orbetello you arrive to Argentario peninsula, a mountainous territory, with a few terraces created by man where vineyards and olive trees are cultivated, which descends to the sea in coves and rocky beaches.
Inland you can visit the Tuff Area, a charming region of tuffaceous rocks with ancient villages and medieval fortifications. Pitigliano, a village perched on a volcanic rock, it is a truly spectacular sight for the visitor, especially at sunset or at night. Over the centuries it has maintained its medieval structure, renaissance architecture and the ancient Jewish ghetto: it looks like a maze of alleys, arches and squares with craft shops and beautiful views on the cliffs. You have an exceptional visual impact thanks to the numerous caves into the tuff, lined up on the edge of the cliff, a few years ago used as dwellings and now converted into cellars. The surrounding vineyards, whose volcanic soils are particularly fertile, produce one of the most known Italian white wines: Bianco di Pitigliano, DOC since 1966, with a golden color and a dry taste.
Not far from this area Morellino di Scansano is also produced, the most famous and internationally appreciated wine of the Tuscan Maremma, since 2006 declared DOCG. With its ruby red color, which evolves towards the garnet type in the reserve, and its intense flavor, it comes from a well-established tradition of production linked to the territory: here the cultivation of vineyards has ancient origins dating back to the Etruscans. From Scansano you can easily reach the thermal baths of Saturnia, a serie of waterfalls and natural limestone basins where thermal water flows constantly at a temperature of more than 30 degrees, an enchanting place in the open countryside where even in winter you can have a bath and enjoy the benefits of sulfur-rich waters.
In addition to its breathtaking sceneries and the cultural routes, the Maremma is also a region with a way of life based on respect for the environment and the preservation of traditions, a land that still offers a genuine culture, an aspect you can find in its poor cuisine, where simple and healty products are used, giving to the local dishes strong flavors and uniques fragrances.
