Catherine was born in the district of Fontebranda, where is the home of the Shrine of St. Catherine, which among the many relics houses the crucifix which gaves her the stigmata. Not far away, in the Basilica of San Domenico, the relic is worshiped instead of the head, transported to Rome a few years after the death of the saint.
In her ceaseless dedication to the care of the sick, Catherine used to spend whole nights at the bedside of the dying who had found support at the Hospital of Santa Maria della Scala: it is here that you will find the Oratorio di Santa Caterina della Notte, where the Santa went to pray and rest her body sick and exhausted from the long hours of wakefulness.
